چکیده

In the past decade, Deepwater Horizon oil spill triggered a spike in investigatory effort on effects of crude chemicals, most notably polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), marine organisms and ecosystems. Oysters, susceptible to both waterborne sediment-bound contaminants due their filter-feeding sessile nature, have become great interest among scientists as bioindicator model organism for research environmental stressors. It has been shown many parts world that PAHs readily bioaccumulate soft tissues oysters. Subsequent experiments highlighted negative associated with exposure including upregulation antioxidant detoxifying gene transcripts enzyme activities such Superoxide dismutase, Cytochrome P450 enzymes, Glutathione S-transferase, reduction DNA integrity, increased infection prevalence, reduced abnormal larval growth. Much these could be attributed either oxidative damage, or reallocation energy away from critical biological processes reproduction calcification toward health maintenance. Additional abiotic stressors temperature, salinity, pH may change how oyster responds compound PAH exposure. The acidification longer-term salinity changes appear add onto toxicity, while shorter-term induce mechanisms reduce Elevated temperatures, other hand, cause large physiological own additional fails any significant little discernable pattern. this review, is recognized study anthropogenic impacts environment, various are compared, synergistic considered. Lastly, understudied photo-toxicity oysters reveals drastic increases toxicity via photooxidation formation quinones. consequences interaction between local global thus provide glimpse into differential response across regions world.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon selected galaxies

Context. This is the fourth in a series of papers based on the ISOCAM Parallel Survey at 6.7 μm. While the first three papers have been devoted to active galactic nuclei (AGN), here we report on emission-line galaxies without AGN signatures in their optical spectra. Aims. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission has been found in both starbursts and modestly starforming galaxies, but the ...

Biological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are included in various environmental pollutants such as airborne particles and have been reported to induce a variety of toxic effects. On the other hand, PAH derivatives are generated from PAHs both through chemical reaction in the atmosphere and metabolism in the body.PAH derivatives have become known for their specific toxicities such as estrogenic/an...

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Far-infrared Spectroscopy

The far-IR characteristics of astrophysically relevant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) averaging in size around 100 carbon atoms have been studied using the theoretical spectra in the NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic Database. These spectra were calculated using density functional theory. Selections of PAH species are made, grouped together by common characteristics or trends, such as siz...

Closed-shell polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon cations: a new category of interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Density functional theory has been employed to calculate the harmonic frequencies and intensities of a range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cations that explore both size and electronic structure effects on the infrared spectroscopic properties of these species. The sample extends the size range of PAH species considered to more than 50 carbon atoms and includes several representative...

Determinants of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-DNA Adducts in Human Placenta1

To determine the relative contributions of tobacco smoking and P-450 metabolism (cytochrome P-450iAi) in the formation of benzo(a)pyrenediol-epoxide and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-DNA adducts in vivo, 16 human placentas were assayed for aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase activity and (±)r-7,f-8-dihydroxy-c-9,10-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo(a)pyrene-DNA adduci levels. Immunoaffinity chro...
